The most common question we get isn't about price or features — it's "okay, but what do I actually have to do?" So here's the honest, step-by-step version of what happens between deciding to try Startling menu and having it live on your tables.
Whatever you have today is fine — a PDF, a photo of your printed menu, a spreadsheet, even a stack of handwritten notes. You don't need to reformat anything or type it into a special template first. That part is our job, not yours.
We enter every dish, category, and price into Startling menu, and translate the menu into the languages you want your guests to see. This is the part most digital menu tools leave entirely to the restaurant owner, which is usually why so many small businesses never get around to it. We do it as part of setup, at no extra charge — not a paid "concierge" upsell.
While we're at it, we'll flag anything that looks like it needs your input: an ambiguous price, a dish name we're not sure how to translate well, an allergen we can't confirm from a menu alone. You'll only hear from us about the things that actually need a decision.
Once your menu is built, we generate print-ready QR codes — one per table, or however you want to organize them. Print them yourself, or take the file to any local print shop. Stick them on the tables, and you're live.
From there, it runs itself. A guest scans the code, the menu opens in their phone's browser in their own language, with prices in their own currency if you've enabled that. They can order straight from the table, and it lands on your kitchen or bar's order board immediately — no app for them to install, no account for them to create.
For a typical menu — a few dozen dishes across a handful of categories — going from "you sent us your menu" to "it's live and ready to print QR codes" usually takes about a day. Larger or more complex menus can take a bit longer, and we'll tell you honestly if yours will. We'd rather set the right expectation than promise a number we can't hit.
Prices change, dishes come and go, a special sells out on a Tuesday night — all of that you handle yourself, instantly, no waiting on us. Setup is the one-time, hands-on part; day-to-day running of the menu is fast because you're not waiting on anyone.
If you want to see the exact menu a guest would land on, scan our live demo — it's the real thing, not a mockup. And if you're ready to get your own menu started, the first month is free.
